• Handmade walnut, canarywood, padauk and yellowheart wood handle
• Carbon steel scraper (with hex wrench, bottle opener and ruler)
• 1/2" x 6" ferrocerium rod
• 3/32" tether nylon cord
• $22 donation to Mission 22
When your ferro rod is worn out, you can untie the cord and replace the rod. To allow for this long term use, the rods are not glued in place. They are secured with the cord and may jiggle within the handle. This is perfectly normal and does not affect the function.
Why the fire starter?
Fire is one of the first things early man discovered that increased his survivability and comfort level. We could beat the elements, cook food and improve other aspects of daily life. The thing is...fire has to be continually fed or it will burn out and die waiting for sparks and fuel to rekindle it. There is a fire that burns within all us from birth and it must be fed. For some, the fire may shrink and smolder to very low levels, to the point where some might want to blow it out. The fire starter is a symbol of simplicity but when action is taken and the sparks are fed your fire will return.
The purchase of each fire starter sends a $22 donation to Mission 22. Their WIN program was a physical and mental rebirth for me as a person that was made possible by the Green Beret Foundation. I make and shape the wooden ends by hand. Some may have a compass set in resin or engraving on the side. After the $22 donation, the remainder of your purchase goes to the next ferro rod and miscellaneous supplies. I don't like to put a monetary value on time. It's priceless. I enjoy making these and the joy created is all the payment required for my time.
